Giovanelli Family - one of the world's oldest noble linages by Mario Eduard Giovanelli

The Giovanellis, and specifically the ‚von Giovanelli zu Gerstburg and Hörtenberg’, are one of the world’s oldest noble lineages - first mentioned in an official document already in 1230.

The extended Giovanelli family originally hails from Lombardy (Northern Italy) and over the course of history they spread northward throughout the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and settled mostly in South Tyrol (Italy), Grisons (Switzerland) and in Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Carinthia, Styria and Vienna (Austria), as well as in the USA.

The first mention made of the widely spread noble lineage, of which the lineages of the baron, count and duke von Giovanelli belong, dates back to the 13th century. Towards the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century (towards the end of Austro-Hungarian monarchy) numerous family members possessed noble honorable ranks in society.

Ludovico Cardinal Flangini Giovanelli (1733 – 1804) Cardinal of San Marco and patriarch of Venice;

Joseph, Freiherr (Baron) von Giovanelli zu Gerstburg und Hörtenberg (1784-1845), statesman, who organized the national defense with Andreas Hofer in 1809, among others;

Ignaz, Freiherr (Baron) von Giovanelli zu Gerstburg und Hörtenberg (1815 – 1889) several terms as conservative Councilman to the Realm between 1867 and 1889,

Karl, Freiherr (Baron) von Giovanelli zu Gerstburg und Hörtenberg (1847 – 1922), Austrian Agricultural Minister from 1900 – 1904
